"Stolen firearms were recovered in just one in every eight incidents.Half of the stolen weapons were not stored safely...

In total eight stolen rifles, two shotguns and four handguns later turned up in another crime. The study, the first since the institute set up its National Firearms Theft Monitoring Program last year, found about 60 per cent of thefts were of rifles "

Gun Theft Soaring 'Gun theft in NSW jumped 20 percent in the last year with thieves targeting poorly secured firearms in homes. NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures reveal 162 or the record 562 firearm thefts reported to police in the year to June were from private residence...Rifles, shotguns, pistols and replica firearms were among the stolen weapons.

Police Minister Michael Daley said police were inspecting gun storage arrangements in homes and business premises.

"Police won't hesitate to confiscate any firearms and ammunition that they find is not kept in accordance with safe storage guidelines.They will seize the firearms and confiscate the owner's licence on the spot," Mr Daley said.Offenders could face up to two years' imprisonment and fines of up to $5500, he said.'
